Expert summary
Honolulu is the capital of the US state of Hawaii. The city is located along the coast of the island of Oahu. It is a world famous tourist destination as well as the center of Hawaii's government and economy. Honolulu achieved prominence within Hawaii largely due to its natural port location for merchants moving between North America and Asia. While commerce is important to Honolulu it is most famous for its tourism industry. The city streets are packed with more tourists than residents milling in and out of the many trendy shops and fancy hotels. And, of course, there is the famous Waikiki beach where tourists try their hand at surfing and enjoy the crystal clear Hawaiian ocean.
